V8 Supercars - The V8 Supercars are now making their way back from NZ. Round 3 was run over the weekend, and the Toll HSVs were again the stand-out of the field. But Garth Tander wasn't too happy after the final race was shortened to fit in with Channel 7's AFL commitments.

WRC - Stephane Prevot teams up with Chris Atkinson for the rest of the season. Ford to go on the attack before the tarmac events, and Petter Solberg is off to recce Rally Jordan next month.

Aussies abroad - Will Power had a disappointing run at Houston, giving up the championship lead to Sebastien Bourdais. Meanwhile, Marcus Ambrose is fighting on in NASCAR, even though he took Juan Pablo Montoya out of the O'Reilly 300 at Texas Motor Speedway.

Music this week from:

The Shins - Australia and Phantom Limb. To play music for a long time, you have to surprise the people that love you – while also surprising yourself. Enter 'Wincing the Night Away'.

Recorded over time in James Mercer’s basement studio, Phil Ek’s Seattle digs, and in Oregon City with veteran producer Joe Chiccarelli (Beck, U2) – 'Wincing the Night Away' is a whole new animal. It is the sound of a band growing up and out.

The Album Leaf - Always for You. I’ve always felt that the music I make is perfect for that kind of (Icelandic) setting, explains Jimmy LaValle. Inside Sundlaugin (the name of the studio means “swimming pool” in Icelandic), LaValle was able to craft an album that ventures into new, at times beat-intensive, territory. Chillingly delicate and more pop-based than ever before, In a Safe Place masterfully negotiates the spaces between minimal electronic music and melancholy instrumental neo-rock.

Thanks Sub-Pop Records for providing tracks from The Shins and The Album Leaf.

Alex Smart - Talk. We played Alex Smart almost a year ago. This is another track from her EP, 'This is Me', and is available from her web site, or as individual track downloads from amplifier.co.nz.

Listen to more of here tunes at MySpace.

Background music: Cargo Cult - 'Wed' (courtesy of Magnatune). Intro music: JRD - 'Downshift 116'. Incidental music by Derek K. Miller.

If you like the song, email the artist and let them know. Or, better still, buy a CD!
